Yoga For Stress Relief – Ten Instant Ways to Cope With Stress at Work

Do you ever feel tired and anxious at work? Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by the volume of work to do that you physically feel sick and wonder how you will ever get through the day?

When you feel like this, instead of reaching for the chocolate bar, cake store or coffee machine, try these quick and easy yoga practices. You will instantly feel energised, regain your confidence and improve your focus, which means you are more likely to complete your work with ease.

1. Take a deep breath. Breathing deeply instantly energises your body and improves your ability to concentrate. Sit comfortably and take several rounds of deep abdominal breathing.

2. Shake and flap your hands for 1 -3 minutes. Rest them on your lap. Stroke down the left arm with your right hand. Repeat on the other arm.

3. Interlock your fingers, turn your hands outwards and bring your arms straight over your head. Look up and stretch your hands to the ceiling. Hold the stretch for 3 – 5 rounds of deep breathing. Lower your arms. Repeat 3 – 5 times.

4. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Silently repeat the word “peace” on each out-breath. Do this for 5 – 10 rounds of deep breathing.

5. Sit on the edge of your chair, legs straight out in front of you. Slip your shoes off. Stretch your toes away from you and then flex them in towards your shins.

6. Interlock your fingers, turn your hands outwards and bring your arms straight over your head. Breathe out and lean over to one side, take 3 – 5 rounds of deep breathing. Inhale and return your body to the centre. Repeat on the other side.

7. Massage the balls of your right foot into the floor, press your foot down in all directions for about 30 seconds. Relax and repeat on your left foot.

8. Close your eyes and massage your temples, use either your finger tips or heel of your hand. Stay focused on your breathing as your massage your temples. Do this for at least one minute.

9. Give yourself a hand massage. Massage your palm then massage, stretch and pull each digit. Start with the right hand then repeat on your left hand.

10. Sit on your chair, slowly bend your right leg and hug your right knee to your chest. Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, let go off your knee and return your leg to the floor. Repeat with the left leg.
